DISK, or the Revolutionary Workers Unions Confederation, was a radical leftist labor union established in
Turkey in 1967 by leftists who broke away from
Turk Is, the government-controlled union. DISK played an important role in the anarchy, intellectual fervor, and terrorism that helped lead to the creation of the
Kurdistan Workers Party (
PKK) and the September 1980 military coup in Turkey. For example, DISK organized the notorious May Day rally in 1977 in Taksim Square, Istanbul, that resulted in the deaths of 37 people when persons unknown started shooting into the crowd. After it came to power in 1980, the military government of General
Kenan Evren closed DISK down.
